Anderton Boat Lift opened in 1875 to move boats through the roughly 50-foot height difference between two waterways. Designed by Edwin Clark, it originally used two water-filled wrought-iron caissons supported on linked hydraulic rams, so one counterbalanced the other. Corrosion later prompted conversion to electric operation before restoration returned it to hydraulic working.
