Belfast Botanic Gardens began in 1828 under the Belfast Botanic and Horticultural Society. Its Palm House, begun in 1839 to designs by Charles Lanyon, uses pioneering curving iron-and-glass construction; the central dome followed in 1852. The Tropical Ravine opened in 1889, and the gardens passed to Belfast Corporation in 1894 before becoming a public park.
