Address

Braemar Castle was built in 1628 for the Earl of Mar as a fortified residence and hunting lodge. The tall L-plan tower house was damaged by fire during the Jacobite rising of 1689 and later served as a government garrison. Its distinctive star-shaped defensive wall and later alterations reflect its changing role between aristocratic residence, stronghold and military post.
