Carlisle Cathedral began as an Augustinian priory church in 1122 and became a cathedral in 1133. Norman masonry survives in the transept and shortened nave, while the choir was rebuilt in Gothic form after a destructive fire in 1292. Its vast east window dates from the 14th century, and the building bears marks of border warfare, Reformation and Civil War damage.
