Donnington Castle survives principally as a tall twin-towered stone gatehouse standing above substantial grass-covered earthworks. During the Civil War its Royalist garrison endured a siege lasting around twenty months. Parliament ordered most of the castle demolished after its surrender, leaving the distinctive twin-towered gatehouse and earthworks.
