Dunvegan Castle is a large castellated house built directly on a rocky outcrop above a sea loch, with towers and ranges from several different periods clustered around older defensive structures. The complex grew from medieval defensive structures on a rocky outcrop, with later generations joining and remodelling buildings into the castellated house seen today. Its fabric consequently records several distinct periods of construction.
