Fingal's Cave cuts into a Paleocene lava flow composed of striking columnar basalt. As the thick lava cooled and contracted it fractured into regular polygonal columns; subsequent marine erosion exploited joints and weaker material to excavate the cavern. The sea-filled interior and parallel columns give the cave its unusual resonance and strongly geometric form.
