Loch Ericht is a long Highland loch enclosed by extensive mountain terrain, with steep slopes descending towards a narrow ribbon of dark water. The relative absence of development gives many views a remote character, with the strongest compositions often built around the relationship between water, mountain ridges and large areas of open sky.

Weather plays an important part in its appearance. Low cloud can obscure the higher summits and create layered mountain silhouettes, while clearer conditions reveal the scale of the surrounding landscape. Rocks, moorland vegetation and irregular sections of shoreline can be used as foreground elements, particularly in wider views along the length of the loch.
