Loch Leven combines a broad expanse of freshwater with islands, reed beds, wetlands and distant hills, creating a landscape that can be approached at several different scales. Calm conditions can produce expansive reflections and restrained compositions, while changing weather brings stronger textures to the water and more dramatic skies.

The loch is also an important habitat for waterfowl and other birdlife, adding a strong wildlife element alongside the wider landscape. Shoreline vegetation, jetties and isolated trees can provide foreground structure, while mist and low cloud can simplify distant views and separate the loch into subtle layers of water, land and sky.
