Manchester's Northern Quarter is a dense grid of former warehouses, independent shops, music venues, cafés and bars between Piccadilly and Ancoats. Oldham Street, Thomas Street and the smaller connecting lanes combine red brick, painted shutters, street art and a steady mixture of shoppers, workers and nightlife.

The quarter offers strong colour and texture, but its most effective photographs often use those surfaces as a setting for people rather than as subjects alone. Reflections after rain, narrow shafts of sunlight and evening shop light can separate figures from the darker brick streets, while weekends provide especially varied crowds.
