Orford Castle is dominated by a remarkably intact polygonal stone keep rising above the surrounding village and open ground. The unusual shape of the tower changes noticeably with viewpoint, while projecting turrets, narrow windows and heavily textured masonry give the exterior considerable detail when photographed more closely.

From farther away, the keep forms a strong isolated silhouette and can be placed against large areas of sky or incorporated into the surrounding landscape. Directional light helps reveal the uneven surfaces and depth of the stonework, while overcast conditions can suit more restrained architectural studies concentrating on shape, texture and the repeating patterns of the openings.
