Seaton Tramway grew from Claude Lane's earlier Eastbourne Electric Tramway. After development threatened that line, part of the closed Seaton railway branch was acquired and rebuilt to a 2 ft 9 in gauge. The relocated tramway opened in 1970, using purpose-built electric cars whose designs draw on traditional British tramways.
