Stonehenge developed in stages over more than a millennium. An earthwork enclosure was created around 3000 BC, followed by the great stone settings around 2500 BC. Large sarsens were arranged as an outer circle and inner horseshoe, with smaller bluestones between them. The bluestones were subsequently rearranged as the wider ceremonial landscape continued to evolve.
