Stourhead is an 18th-century landscape garden arranged around a large artificial lake, with wooded slopes framing carefully composed views of classical temples, a grotto and an arched bridge. Classical temples, a grotto and a bridge punctuate the circuit, reflecting his European travels and the emerging 18th-century ideal of landscape as art.
