Union Chain Bridge carries a narrow road across the River Tweed between England and Scotland. Opened in 1820, its iron chains, stone pylons and restrained deck form one of the world's earliest surviving suspension bridges and give the crossing a distinctly light appearance within the wooded valley.

Views along the roadway emphasise the repeating hangers and gentle curve of the deck, while positions beside the river place the entire span against trees and water. Autumn colour, mist and a calm river can soften the engineering, whereas harder side light brings out the textures of the masonry and ironwork.
