Windermere fills a long pre-glacial river valley that was repeatedly deepened by ice, producing the classic ribbon-lake form seen today. Retreat of the British-Irish Ice Sheet around 15,000 years ago left a complex lake bed of sub-basins, ridges and moraines. Hard volcanic rocks dominate the northern basin, while softer sedimentary rocks influence the south.
