Bassenthwaite Lake is a broad, comparatively shallow body of water with open shores, wooded sections and the northern Lake District fells rising around its basin. It is fed by the River Derwent after the river leaves Derwentwater, creating a linked system of lakes and valleys formed largely by Ice Age erosion and deposition. Its relatively shallow waters and broad floodplain contrast with the steeper basins farther south.
