Beaumaris Castle is a remarkably symmetrical medieval fortress built as concentric rings of pale stone walls, towers, gatehouses and a water-filled moat. Architect James of St George designed an exceptionally symmetrical concentric fortress, with successive rings of walls, a water-filled moat and a dock accessible to ships. Building slowed as royal finances were diverted elsewhere, leaving towers and gatehouses permanently below their intended height.
