Elgin Cathedral combines twin western towers, open Gothic windows and roofless walls in a compact setting rich in architectural detail. The surviving tracery frames sky and clouds, while repeated arches and weathered stone reward both wide views and close studies. Side light gives depth to the masonry, and the chapter house offers a contrasting, enclosed subject with an intricate vaulted ceiling. The surrounding grounds provide space to separate the towers from nearby buildings.
