Grainger Market is a large covered market completed in 1835 as part of Newcastle's neoclassical city-centre redevelopment. Long aisles contain food traders, small shops and cafés beneath repeated roof lights, with entrances opening directly into the busy streets of Grainger Town.

The market combines regular architectural structure with close human activity. Central viewpoints emphasise receding aisles and signs, while side positions allow traders and customers to be framed by stalls and doorways. Roof light is generally soft, although the entrances produce stronger silhouettes and transitions between the market and street outside.
