Putney Bridge crosses a broad and busy stretch of the River Thames, with its pale stone arches forming a strong architectural feature against the water. Views along the river can combine the bridge with rowing boats, riverside buildings and passing traffic, while reflections and changing light give the scene a different character throughout the day.

The surrounding riverbanks also allow the bridge to be photographed from a variety of distances and angles. Longer views emphasise its repeating arches and relationship with the Thames, while closer compositions can concentrate on individual spans, boats passing beneath them and the contrast between the structure and the movement of the river.
