Britannia Bridge is a massive two-level crossing of the Menai Strait, with stone piers supporting a modern steel arch deck carrying road and rail traffic. A severe fire in 1970 destroyed the tubular superstructure, after which the bridge was rebuilt with steel arches while retaining Stephenson's stonework. A road deck was added above the railway in 1980.
